In an interview with Vanguardia, José Ricardo Pérez Sandoval, Vice President of Investments and Strategy at Alianza Fiduciaria, spoke about options for investing amid uncertainty.
At both the global and national levels, there is a trail of uncertainty due to political shifts and decisions. The trade war initiated by Donald Trump through tariffs is generating repercussions for investments worldwide. On the domestic front, this reality of uncertainty is similar. Fiscal pressures such as high indebtedness and increased government spending keep tension high within the national economy.
These macro decisions also affect investments made by companies and citizens, making alternative assets more attractive.
“We are probably witnessing a global slowdown phenomenon that will undoubtedly affect the country to some extent. In a world that is growing less, Colombia will certainly be affected,” said Pérez Sandoval about the global situation.
Reviewing each investor’s profile
When considering investing, the executive at Alianza Fiduciaria suggests that it is necessary to consider three factors:
- How much volatility can you tolerate in your portfolio?
- How much can you withstand negative months?
- How much market stress can you handle?
Answering these questions defines each person’s investment profile. If the investor does not have much capacity to handle uncertainty, they should lean toward a conservative profile. The only objective would be to beat inflation (5.16%).
Therefore, options that allow for returns between 8% and 9% effective annual rate could be considered.
At the second level is the moderate investor, who could tolerate these changes a bit more. These investments could be for a longer term, and investors could seek returns between 10% and 13%.
Meanwhile, the most aggressive profile could aim for long-term investments, enduring fluctuations over time. Normally, these investors have greater economic capacity.
“They can have more dollars in their portfolio, more variable income assets such as local stocks, foreign stocks, a greater component of alternative products and, under current market conditions, could aim for a return close to 15%,” Pérez Sandoval said about this profile.
Alternative assets
One of the components of these types of portfolios is alternative assets. This strategy is not tied to factors such as stock market fluctuations or the dollar exchange rate.
One advantage is that they are easily accessible to most citizens. From COP $100,000, you can access these types of investments under the CxC Fund strategy. Although the destinations vary, the most common approaches for this segment are investments in payroll loans for pensioners, discounts on final court rulings where the Republic of Colombia must pay compensation, and invoices from large payers.
